The boys vote on Ralph to be their chief in the beginning of this book. Ralph is very structured and works in a way that society would. Under the direction of Ralph, the boys make a fire on the top of a mountain on the island. Ralph explains to the boys that the fire will get them rescued. This quote shows how the boys are very enthusiastic about the fire, because they all want to be saved from the island.
If a ship comes near the island, they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make fire”. Ralph is a wise leader, since he listens to what his tribe says and gathers the best ideas. In other words he feels like he is in charge of the kids on the island, and they see him as an elder whom they can trust.
If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us so we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire” (Golding 29-30). Ralph knows that there is no way someone would go to a random island without a signal that there are people stuck on the island. The boys would have to keep a signal going because it could be rare for anybody to come nearby the island and save them. Ralph believes that hunting for food would be a second priority and the fire would be more important.
From 1924- to 1953, Stalin was the absolute leader of the U.S.S.R, even though he did not make the best or the most thoughtful decisions. He was one of the strongest leaders in the entire history of The United Socialist Soviet Republic. However, many argue that because of the things Stalin ordered others to do, he wasn't the most rational leader, while the same phenomenon is brought up in William Golding's age novel, Lord of the Flies. In this story, a group of boys end up on a stranded island, and to keep everything in the proper order, they have to assign a leader. After a short vote by hands, a boy named Ralph takes the potions of leadership, while another boy, Jack, is highly jealous of Ralph being chosen chief and not him.
The worst tornado in U.S. history occurred on March 18, 1925. Tri-State Tornado of 1925 killed 695 people, injured approximately 2,027 people, and caused $16.5 million ($1.4 billion adjusted for 2011) in property damage (Tri-State Tornado Facts and Information, 2015). The tornado traveled 235 miles through Missouri, Indiana, and Illinois and had an average width of 3500 feet. At times the tornado was reached a width of over one mile.
Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in! (Golding 114).
Leadership Abuse in Lord of the Flies The famous 17th century poet Jean de la Fontaine once said “Anyone entrusted with power will abuse it if not also animated with the love of truth and virtue, no matter whether he be a prince, or one of the people.” When the children in Lord of the Flies find themselves stranded on a distant island with no adults to be found, they encounter many forms of power, hence encountering many forms of abuse of power as well. This power abuse can be organized by the two leaders who each ruled the island during their own periods. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding utilizes these leaders, Ralph and Jack, to illustrate how people in positions of power will abuse their power for personal gain when given the opportunity.
Leadership is something that stands out. Good leadership is always important. You always want to follow the strongest person in the group right? Well in the book called “Lord of the Flies” Ralph is a better leader than Jack. Some reasons include Ralph has a goal or clear vision of being rescued.
Human behaviors are easy to be changed by the experiences and environment. As the time passes by, the changed behaviors can be worse or better than before. However, most people become worse because of the specific experiences in their life time. In Lord of the Flies, the changes of behavior are occurred obviously in the characters of Jack, Roger, and Ralph.
Power and manipulation takes over people’s minds and turns us into egotistical people without even knowing and the sense of having control or authority can brainwash us into the people who we despise. William Golding fabricates his ideas around the time period 1933 after he received his English degree where he mostly wrote poems. Golding’s world consists of writing novels, pulling ideas from the real world into his own creative words on paper, this is where he developed his most famous book, Lord of the Flies, throughout 1954. The perspective of Lord of the Flies is through the eyes of the Second World War and since he was in this war, his point of view on violence changed and gave him a different outlook on society. In the Lord of the Flies
In the book Lord of the Flies, there were two small societies. The main one, which will be the one focused on, was made in the beginning. It was established with rules from the beginning. That then built the social hierarchy that is the group. There are different jobs and positions, these are what separates everybody and made the social hierarchy in Lord of the Flies.
Everyone has this underlying darkness within them that is hidden away deep inside the nooks and crannies of their hearts. Golding demonstrates this through the use of his major characters, Ralph and Jack. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, the author William Golding utilizes character development to suggest the idea that when individuals are separated from civilization, dark forces will arise and threaten unity and harmony. Golding presents the protagonist, Ralph, who is decently intelligent and completely civilized, to demonstrate how once individuals are pulled away from civilization, the dark forces within them will arise and change how they are for the time being.
Rhetoric If you stood up in front of 20,000 people, will you be able to overcome any problem and convince your listeners? Rhetoric, as the great Aristotle defined it, is “the faculty of observing in any given case the available means of persuasion” (“The Art of Rhetoric”). Rhetoric has the power to change people´s mind about any subject in particular, ergo it has the ability to make significant changes. As it has been already said, this public speaking faculty has as a main purpose, the power of convincing an audience.
In our society we’ve always had leaders, people who stand up and direct others to jobs, it’s just part of our society and everyone has expected it. Teachers encourage to stand up and take charge when in groups which only reflects the outside world as well, however some people don’t fit that model and instead they are looking for someone to lead them, someone to be responsible for their decisions because they can’t take the pressure and/or the consequences that come with their decisions. The boys in the Lord of the Flies by William Golding all look for someone else to take charge and tell them what to do. Need someone in charge so they can blame someone when things go wrong? They immediately look for someone to take charge and lead them, to tell them everything's gonna be okay.
In society, there are many standards that people must uphold to. In western society, it is uncommon for men to have long hair or for women to have short hair. Naturally, people will be conscientious of their differences between other people and try to change them or cover them up, and often times people who do not follow the standard are looked down upon. This leads to people trying to fit into the groups around them almost thoughtlessly. However, when people conform without thinking, it can lead to dangerous consequences.
