Defining leadership is not a simple task. There are many contexts to the definition depending on how, what, where, and why someone is leading. John Maxwell’s definition of leadership is: "Leadership is influence - nothing more, nothing less." Bill Gates defines leadership as, "As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others." Warren Bennis defines leadership as: "Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.” So, what is Leadership? This complex question definitely has no definite answer and depends on whether it is in the context of an organization, society, religion, or politics. Our office being the premier office in the school district is tasked with induction, supporting, offering ongoing professional development, and retention of new teachers and leaders. The leadership style that works for our office is a blend of transformational and leadership style. Some of the above-mentioned roles have emerged as a result of the needs of staff members that our office has seen over a period of four years. During the year 2014, our office hired 14 mentor teachers to support with retention in the school district. The 14 mentors that were hired were highly motivated, talented, goal oriented, and ambitious individuals. Initially, it was hard for all individuals to collaborate, be on the same page, and work together. This led to discontent, distrust, and a clear divide amongst the mentors. As a result of this, the leadership provided opportunities for all individuals to work out their differences, trained us in Arbinger’s Outward Mindset, helped identify our strengths using Gallup’s Strengthsfinder, and our Compass Points. Very soon a culture shift and collegiality were evident. All these activities led to the formation of several different work streams based on the strengths and motivation level of individuals. According to Day & Antonakis (2012), leadership is one of the most examined phenomena and is universally evident in humans and animals and that it is important for the effective functioning of any organization or society (pp. 4-5). The observation process of leadership roles in my educational setting led to clarity around the different leadership styles and how each one is different from the other.
