The Cost of Contrasting Leadership In the 1940s, William Golding experienced the Second World War - a grave time of horrible happenings. Golding, author of Lord of the Flies, witnessed the different approaches to leadership during war, and how these approaches shaped society in various ways. The theme of differing leadership types is evident in Lord of the Flies, set during World War II, in which a plane crash leaves a group of British school boys stranded on an island. In the book, we are introduced to two boys in pursuit of power - Jack and Ralph.
In the book of Lord Of The Flies by William Golding, there are boys that are stranded on an island because of a plane crash. Although the boys attempted to copy their british government they failed. Because of the children's young age, the society that they established is doomed to fail because children can not maintain a society based on authority and interpersonal respect. This is demonstrated throughout the book by the varies of death, the breaking of the conch shell, and the theft of glasses.
Today the world is so focused on how we dress and how we do stuff in the society. I am going to talk about leaders who are effective in today’s society but in the book Lord of the Flies too. I am also going to mention who I would have followed if I was in the book Lord of the Flies. Leadership is a very big and important role to come by in today’s society. Most people say they can be good leaders but in reality they don’t really play out to make a good leader.
In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, an ample amount of kids and young adolescents become stranded on a tropical island due to their plane crashing and creating a “scar” on the island. When a majority vote to make Ralph leader of the community, Jack later leaves and forms his own, the Hunters. In order for someone to be a great and successful leader, one must be dominant and civilized. Without these two specific traits, the person will not get the respect from his followers and will eventually lose his leadership to someone else more reliable. One dominant leader that was masterly able to control his army, the Nazis, was Adolf Hitler.
In the book Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, the most interesting aspect about it to me is the conflict between leadership of Ralph, Jack, Simon, and even Piggy. In book, it establishing from the beginning of who was going to be at the top in leadership of the group, Jack and Ralph. After a vote of the crowd, Ralph had won the name of chief. However, Jack never fully accepted Ralph as the chief of the group. In the book, the kids light a fire so that passing ships can see the smoke and come rescue them on the island.
Imagine you are heading to vacation on a plane and all of a sudden you crash on an island with a bunch of strangers with no connection to the outside world. Lord of the Flies was written by William Golding. A plane full of boys who didn’t know each other crashed on an island with nothing to help them escape. The boys had to grow up quickly and some had to take on the rule of being a leader for the rest of the boys. There were many conflicts between the boys all throughout the book.
A leader can have a negative, or a positive effect on people. A savage leader produces a savage society. Followers will follow what a leader does. People who are scared will follow someone who has a good presence about them. For, example on page 22 “But there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out : there was his size, and attractive appearance; and most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch.
In the book the Lord of the Flies by William Golding, there are many prevalent themes. One theme the influence of a strong leader be them good or bad, oftentimes causes the followers to bend their morals to conform to their leaders. Another such theme is when the members of a society pursue self-interests to the exclusion of cooperation as a group toward common goals, the society is likely to become fragmented and in conflict. One final theme it that the The rules and laws of society function to contain and suppress the natural human tendency that many people have toward evil. Along with multiple examples in the book, these claims are also supported by real world examples.
Leadership is something that stands out. Good leadership is always important. You always want to follow the strongest person in the group right? Well in the book called “Lord of the Flies” Ralph is a better leader than Jack. Some reasons include Ralph has a goal or clear vision of being rescued.

Leadership is a principal theme in Lord Of The Flies as it shows how being a leader is difficult and how society can crumble, effortlessly. It also implicitly explains how societies need leadership; it is the pillar that holds society from crumbling down. To be a leader isn’t that hard. However, to be a leader with the following qualities, makes them a strong one: inner strength, to be mature, confident and courageous; clarity, to be clear and straightforward; discipline, to be able to be strict and tell people off for things they shouldn’t be doing or saying, without doubt.
Lord of the Flies represents the behavior of not only savagery, but how some humans in society seem to have stronger leadership qualities than others. Throughout the story, author William Golding elaborates that leadership is different and comes better in some people through his characters. The protagonist Ralph symbolizes a democratic rule which ends up falling apart due to the lack of rules. On the other hand, the antagonist Jack demonstrates dictatorship which ends up into savagery and chaos. The overall message to this novel is all people have the tendency to follow other people instead of leading them.
