The author describes the devastating effects of the insect apocalypse, such as the loss of pollinators, the decline of food sources, destruction of ecosystems, and even the simple change in landscape of normality in some places of the world that lead to a butterfly effect of problems. Jarvis begins with a story from Sune Boye Riis who lived north of Copenhagen, Denmark where a large population of flying insects inhabited trails and roadways. He remembered riding his bike, “out in the country, moving fast. But strangely, he wasn’t eating any bugs” (Jarvis 3). Out with his son, he realized this as a strange nostalgia reminded him of how many of these insects would float around, forming clouds in front of him as he traversed the rich, rural, grassy levels of his township as kid.

Some of you in here babysit younger siblings or other small children. After you have them play outside and they are hot and sweaty, it feels good to bring them back in the house and cool them off with a big glass of Kool-Aid. After they have their Kool-Aid and are cooled off, you really don’t want to go bring them back outside where it is hot, so you decide to play with play dough. But you don’t have any playdough in the house.

I gift you all with a short response this week, your move Dylan. Bryen is essentially arguing that historians should read petitions as very pointed documents with an inherent bias. The quote, “petitions must not be read as form letters drafted mechanically and sent off to whichever official was available. They are conscious and calculated attempts to frame individual complaints in legal language, and petitioners chose the language they used with care” (155-56), just about sums up his argument. Petitions are in his eyes biased and must be read with that in mind, it is almost a sort of historical sensitivity toward Mary-Engle’s idea of “Forum Shopping.”

Each and everyday we see a new home being built, or a shopping mall opening, or even an apartment complex in the making, but we never think of at what expense all of this is happening.
