Vampire Estate Many people have been fearful of vampires for many years. The appearance and all of the sensitivities of vampires scare people. It scares them because people think vampires are real. These fears are much like the ones in Poe’s stories. “The Fall of the House of Usher” describes fears that many people in that time period had. With all of the evidence in the story, it can be concluded that Roderick and Madeline are vampires, as evidenced by their appearances and their diseases which show that they are vampires. The appearance of Roderick and Madeline is very vampire like. Roderick is very pale and slim. The narrator states, “A cadaverousness of complexion; an eye large, liquid, and luminous beyond comparison; lips somewhat thin and very pallid” (Poe 4). The narrator explains here that Roderick looks dead and his skin and eyes are almost glowing. Vampires look dead, much like Roderick, and the same with his eyes and skin. As with Madeline, she is really underweight and pale much like Roderick. The big difference is Madeline’s death. While the narrator and Roderick are burying her, she seems to look more alive than she was before and she seemed to enjoy being dead. These include sensitivities to light, most foods, loud noise, his sense of smell and various fabrics. All of these symptoms clearly show that he is a vampire. The narrator states, “the most insipid food was alone endurable” (Poe 5). This explains that Roderick’s strange eating habits show that he wants something more than human food; he wants human blood. The narrator then states, “his eyes were tortured by even a faint light” (Poe 5). Everyone knows that vampires are sensitive to light, and Roderick is which helps conclude that he is a vampire.
