Leif Erikson Accomplishments

Did you know that Leif Eriksson founded North America before Columbus, and Jacques Cousteau invented the Aqua Lung? Leif Eriksson was a Viking who discovered North America 500 years before Christopher Columbus. Jacques Cousteau was known for his extensive underseas investigations and wrote a book about his adventures. Both Leif Eriksson and Jacques Cousteau explored, discovered, or invented something that changed history. Leif Eriksson found North America hundreds of years before Christopher Columbus. He spent the winter in America and never returned, but his successful journey led to other visits for timber and eventually trade. Leif revealed North America after being blown off course on his way from Iceland to Greenland. Eriksson originally sailed to Norway where he was converted to Christianity by King Olav. While sailing back, he landed in America and named the part he landed in Vinland because of all the grape vines. In America, Leif met Native Americans and learned about their culture and traditions. Without Leif Eriksson and his discovering of America, we wouldn't be living here to this day.

At age 20, Cousteau planned to become a pilot but broke both his arms in a serious car crash and went back to studying the sea. He was known for his extensive undersea investigations and wrote a book called ''The Silent World'' that describes his early adventures after inventing the Aqua Lung and his exploration of shipwrecks. Jacques created the Aqua Lung which is the first self contained underwater apparatus. In the 1920's, he helped stop underwater dumping of nuclear waste in the Mediterranean Sea.
