In 1492 a man named Christopher Columbus was given the opportunity to find a new way to the kingdom of spice, India. He was given three boats by the Spanish king to sail west instead of east to get to India. Once he arrived although he thought he was in India he had actually arrived in the Caribbean. After this discovery of a new world to the west, many European countries set out to conquer this new land. This new world was inhabited by natives, and once the natives met the Europeans it was downhill.
British Columbia, Columbia, Colombo, District of Columbia, the Columbia river, and Columbus day are all named after the one and only, Christopher Columbus. Christopher Columbus has many things named after him and is one of the most celebrated and renowned men in America even though his is not American. He was the first person to really explore the Americas and stay to colonize. Without him life as we know it would be exponentially different. We have him to thank for our freedom from Europe.
Starting in the late 1400s European explorers came across ‘The New World’ of present day Eastern Hemisphere. After this discovery many countries such as France, Portugal, Netherlands, England and Spain set out to explore this place and conquer land, establish colonies and find riches. Some explorers such as Christopher Colombus and John Cabot had a critical role in new advancements in ‘The New World’ Due to this discovery the world was changed forever. Christopher Columbus was born o n 1451 in Genoa, Italy. His name was Cristoforo Colombo in Italian.
He authored a four-book biography of Columbus and portrayed him as a brave American hero. “Columbus was a man of great and inventive genius. His ambition was lofty and noble, inspiring him with high thoughts and an anxiety to distinguish himself by great achievements. His conduct was characterized by the grandeur of his views and the magnanimity [nobility] of his spirit.” Instead of writing, that Columbus was devastating to the newly found nation and that he sought to take over, cultivate and civilize the Natives.
When I was younger I was under the impression that Christopher Columbus was a great man and that he discovered America. We celebrate Columbus day because we honor him for “discovering America”. From this new information that I have learned today, Christopher Columbus is not the man iv have been taught about.
Each of the documents have similarities and differences to one another and to this week’s lectures. The first article “Nicolas Copernicus letter to Pope Paul III” is basically about astronomy and how Copernicus gets rejected by the church because he believes that the earth rotates, instead of being still. Copernicus and Christopher Colobus’s stories were very similar because Columbus also was rejected at a time because he wasn’t born into royalty and he taught himself how to navigate the world. “The letter of knights of St. John on the fall of Constantinople” and “A letter on the cruelty of the Turks” documents are also very similar to one another. Christopher Columbus is a man who is commonly depicted as a hero and great explorer who discovered our modern day America, but many of the so called “facts” are not all completely true as people would like to believe. Columbus was undoubtedly a courageous explorer who brought many new ideas, cultures, and resources to be exchanged between the New World and Europe. While this is true, it is not uncommon for people to forget the harmful effects brought along with the voyages made by Columbus and the darker details of his times in America. Columbus started from humble middle class family. Columbus was born in 1451 in the Republic of Genoa as the oldest of his four siblings.
Significant Historic Figures All of these three men were very significant figures in history. They all fought for what they believed in. None of the three were afraid to protest or get in trouble for what they wanted or needed. They fought against racism, they protested against government being over powered and citizens getting the rights they deserve, and they fought for the pride in their country.
Christopher Columbus and Hernan Cortes were both famous Spanish adventurers during the Age of Exploration. When the explorers came upon land, they encountered two different cultures. In 1492, Columbus encountered the Taino people, and in 1520, Cortes encountered the Aztecs. The two cultures that the men encountered were different in more ways than they were similar in regards to how the natives treated the men, what weapons they had and their war-like behavior, their technologically advancements, their housing and architectural structures, and even their religion.
