In the book Zinn, The author gives a point of view of Christopher Columbus that is usually not given. Most of the time the story of Christopher Columbus is told from a historian point of view. They usually tell you of his mission, and of the three ships that he takes in order to find gold and other new riches. Zinn informs us that he is not the hero that, that we all think that he is. It shows us that he tortured, abused, and overwhelmingly embarrasses the Arwark Indians.
Christopher Columbus is not worthy of a recognition of a national holiday. Columbus is not worthy of a national holiday because he threatened and killed the Indians. For example, he claimed the Indians land as his own. Also he murdered the Indians and forced them into hard labor. Also to test how sharp his swords were he cut pieces off the Indians.
Many people when they were younger, including myself, were taught that Columbus is a hero and an amazing person who discover the New World. We were all told that Columbus’s purpose for sailing thousands of miles across the Atlantic was to come here in search of undiscovered land. In october, many schools, offices and factories are off for the day because that day is when Christopher Columbus discovered America! But some people do not leave their places of work because they believe that he was a ruthless killer! Here are some reasons why Christopher Columbus was honored for discovering the Americas and, left in the dirt for capturing and killing slaves. So let's start off with why he was honored for discovering the Americas. Christopher columbus was on his way to discover Japan and China but stumbled over another piece of land, North America!
For over 80 years we have glorified, heroized, and celebrated Christopher Columbus for accomplishments that he never accomplished. While at the same time we have forgotten the things that he actually did do, some of which were not very heroic nor ethical. So why, on every second Monday in October, do we miss school and work just to remember a man who wasn’t who we think he was? The answer is simple, we shouldn’t be. What they don’t consider is how his discovery changed and affected America.
