Columbus is not worthy of a holiday because he was cruel to the Natives and claimed their land that they found first. In October of 1492, Portuguese explorer Christopher Columbus landed by ship in the “New World” which is today known as the Americas. Many people believe the holiday that honors him annually in October has great meaning behind it. However, I believe Columbus day should not be celebrated. Christopher Columbus was not the first person ever to discover the Americas, he abused natives on their own land, and the holiday isn’t celebrated in the way it should be. Christopher Columbus was not the first to discover the Americas.
Columbus Day should non be a national vacation in the United States. First of all. it was really obvious that Columbus caused the European colonisation in the Americas and the autochthonal population prostration. His offense obscured his part. A condemnable whose custodies stained with blood should non be commemorated by people.
When I was younger I was under the impression that Christopher Columbus was a great man and that he discovered America. We celebrate Columbus day because we honor him for “discovering America”. From this new information that I have learned today, Christopher Columbus is not the man iv have been taught about.
The U.S. should not continue to celebrate Columbus Day. We aren’t celebrating a man who discovered a new world, but a man who enslaved and killed a myriad of Natives. We, as a country and as an Earth, celebrate a lot holidays each year. They all have inspiring and beautiful stories behind them, and Columbus day seems to be among them.
The United States admires Christopher Columbus for the things people think he did, but his “accomplishments” and “discoveries” may have been false. Columbus day should not be celebrated because he didn’t do the things he said he did, he did terrible things, and he caused problems to happen. Christopher Columbus didn’t do the things he said he did like discovering America, having knowledge, and he never actually meant to find the Americas. Columbus did terrible things such as encouraging men to rape girls, having harsh punishments for people with minor offenses, and he lead hunting dogs to tear the Indians apart. He caused many problems like death, slavery, and destroying culture.
Columbus, an Italian explorer, had set sail in 1492 working for Spain. When he arrived to the Americas, he did not know anything about it, so he felt the need to take over and be a tyrant. America should not celebrate Columbus Day because he terrorized the people of the Americas and did not even achieve any of the goals he set out for, to help Europe gain more knowledge. Columbus Day should not be celebrated due to his cruelty which includes rape, him killing and planning to obliterate all Natives. He had killed many Native Americans almost wiping them out in one generation, he set a plan to exterminate the Native Americans and he encouraged his men to rape the Native Americans.
Columbus comes across as deeply religious, strategic, and politically ambitious. Firstly, Columbus comes across as deeply religious based on the way he acknowledges God for bestowing on him myriad journey mercies that led to a successful voyage. Additionally, since he knew Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand II had strong ties with the Catholic Church, Columbus tactfully introduced the idea that the numerous native peoples he had found constituted a prime ground for Christian conversion and expanding the monarchy’s political jurisdiction. Secondly, Columbus is highly strategic, starting with the way he throws in political and religious ideas to the Spanish rulers, trying to demonstrate that the Indies were ready for conquering by Europeans.
Christopher Columbus is well known throughout America, so known there is a special holiday one a year on the second monday in October. He’s known for finding America and doing many good deeds for America’s evolution. When people explain why this holiday is celebrated, others are told a great man with the name of Christopher Columbus, discovered America. He traveled from Spain to find Asia, specifically India. What people don’t know is he enslaved many people ripping them from their homes without choice.

Finally, we should celebrate Columbus Day because he brought value to America. When I say "value" I mean he made America worth something. Not money-wise but more livable through goods and services for citizens here in America. Basically the "west Indies" people lived off natural resources and made shelter from their surroundings. When Christopher Columbus arrived he made businesses for people who wanted to work, and he made trade markets for people who wanted to buy goods from the old world such as jewelry, jewels, spices, perfume, etc; only the wealthy bought such items.
Even worse, they beheaded children, for their own amusement. What did Columbus do? Nothing. As a leader, he never stopped his men from committing these crimes, but instead watched as the hundreds of thousands of natives committed suicide, yet, people still glorify his name. A person who can watch the murder of millions without stopping it should not have a holiday that praises his good moments and hides
There are many opinions about Columbus Day and whether we should celebrate it as a holiday. I believe the extent in which we should celebrate Columbus Day is just acknowledging him rather than dedicating a federal holiday to him. I would propose to celebrate “Indigenous People’s Day” or “Native Americans’ Day”. My opinion comes from his actual discovery of th New World and his actions after he settled in North America. One reason why I think we should not celebrate Columbus day to the extent of a federal holiday is because of the thinking that Columbus was the one who discovered North America.
