Columbus, an Italian explorer, had set sail in 1492 working for Spain. When he arrived to the Americas, he did not know anything about it, so he felt the need to take over and be a tyrant. America should not celebrate Columbus Day because he terrorized the people of the Americas and did not even achieve any of the goals he set out for, to help Europe gain more knowledge. Columbus Day should not be celebrated due to his cruelty which includes rape, him killing and planning to obliterate all Natives. He had killed many Native Americans almost wiping them out in one generation, he set a plan to exterminate the Native Americans and he encouraged his men to rape the Native Americans. For example, one way Columbus terrorized the Native Americans was encouraging the Spaniards to rape the Native American women and young girls. He wanted to show the Natives that he and his crew can do what they want on that land because they dominate it. Columbus told and “he encouraged his men to rape Native women as young as nine or ten….” Columbus actually allowed his crew to rape the Natives and scar them for life. Another way Columbus had terrorized the Native Americans was by planning to exterminate them all. He wanted to wipe out all of them so he can have the land for himself. Columbus with the help of his crew “...organized an extermination of Native Americans.” Columbus and his men almost killed all Native Americans in one generation. Also Columbus killing many Natives was a way he terrorized them. No matter how minor the Native Americans actions of opposition against Columbus, he would still punish them. Columbus would command his men to torture the Natives because “he punished minor offenses against his domination by cutting off the Natives’ noses and ears.” Columbus killed these Natives slowly so they would feel the crucial pain before they die, which is just horrible. For example, one of the objectives Columbus wanted to achieve was to discover something new. Columbus believed he had discovered the Americas, but how did he discover it if people already were civilized there. The truth is that “Columbus did not discover America, because people had lived here for thousands of years.” Even though there are facts stating that Columbus did not discover America people still believe he did. Another objective Columbus wanted to achieve was to convert people to Christianity. When Columbus arrived to the Americas he did not convert one Native American. Columbus had been on the same land with the Natives and yet “not one of them was converted to the Catholic faith, which was supposedly a prime motive of those voyages.” Instead of converting the Natives and being friendly with them he was just oppressive towards them. Also Columbus did not contribute any new information to Europe’s existing knowledge. He set out to gather new information for Europe so that they can improve their education about the world. Columbus did not discover anything new and “...failed to add anything new to the pool of European knowledge….” He just came back with no new information for Europe because what he did was already done.
