In 1495, Leonardo Da Vinci began painting the Last Supper on the wall of the refectory (dining hall) of Santa Maria Delle Grazie in Milan, Italy, and completed it in 1498 according to Bing Search Engine. This image is a beautiful image that is based off the last supper Jesus has before his crucifixion. “It is the meal taken by Jesus and his disciples, identifying himself with the bread and the wine and linking the meal to his impending death on the cross. The meal was anticipate both of Jesus’ death and of the eschatological banquet referred to in several Old Testament passages and by Jesus” (Marshall). During the event we know that this took place the day before Jesus is crucified which would calculate the year to be between 29-33AD. During this time Jews and the Gentiles are divided in hatred with the Gentiles in charge. During these times the cultural is much different way of life than it is today. Religion is a big issue at the moment and also power is a great deal as while. Kings are all about power and people had the faith of God but the Old Testament is all they had at the moment. The Messiah is not known during this time so life is harder to obey the rules of the way to get into the Kingdom of God. The idea of the Last Supper can be so touching for so many reason. There are so many ideas around like the strength Jesus had. To have the strength to have to eat knowing it is the last meal before leaving this world. The knowledge of the betrayals and denials of the one’s that is so close and yet teach them the word of the Almighty. The idea of giving something as simple as a loaf of bread and a glass of wine to give remembrance to the body and the blood of our Saver.
