Leslie's Journal-essay on conflict The novel Leslie's Journal, written by Allan Stratton, is intruiging and riveting. One of the main, contributing aspects of the story are the conflics between the characters. The conflict between Leslie and Mrs. Kincaid is especially damaging and has caused many problems throughout the course of the book. Mrs. Kincaid doesn’t like Leslie and doesn’t approve of Leslie's friendship with her daughter, Katie. One of the first actions she deliberately took against Leslie was to force Katie to frequently hang out with people other than her. One of the last actions Mrs. Kincaid took against Leslie was to go so far as to deny Leslie the chance to even have a simple conversation with her only friend. …show more content…

Kincaid tried to throw a wedge between Leslie and Katie’s friendship; forcing the girls to hang out with other people in order to hang out with each other. Mrs. Kincaid started inviting others to Katie's sleepovers with Leslie. Mrs. Kincaid invited people who were in a lot of extracurricular activities with Katie and who could potentially replace Leslie in Katie’s life. This distressed Leslie “because instead of me and Katie doing something fun on our own, we'd be with a bunch of other girls.” Furthermore, the people Mrs. Kincaid invited just so happened to hate Leslie and were dead set on humiliating her and excluding her from their activities. Leslie wasn’t so fond of Katie's new friends either, considering just how different their personalities were. Kincaid despised Leslie so much that she refused Leslie the opportunity to even speak to Katie. Leslie was in danger a d was about to go into a potentially fatal situation. She came to the conclusion that she would need the support of her friend in order to safely get through her problem. Leslie decided to call Katie's cellphone but it was answered by Mrs. Kincaid. When Leslie asked “’…can I please speak to Katie?’ ‘I'm afraid Katie is studying for her exams'" was the answer she got. Leslie called twice more before Mrs. Kincaid threatened to call her mom.
