In recent years, more attention has been drawn to the mental health of young people, and major mental illnesses that impact their future. One of the main ones has been Major Depressive Disorder or Depression which is a mood disorder characterized by a saddened mood for an extended period of time, and left untreated can have major consequences. The following proposal puts forth an idea for a way to combat Depression in a scholastic environment. Trained school counselors are equipped to create and maintain a weekly student support group to promote the acceptance and dealing with the impact of Depression on students lives. A letter is sent to the parents of the students qualifying for the group informing them of the students qualification of the groups, expectation of the groups, and an informed consent request. At the first meeting of each student, they will be asked to fill out an informed consent and return it to the group supervisor. Also, they will be given a letter of informed consent to be signed by their parents and returned. Ground Rules. In order to maintain order and keep on schedule there are five ground rules that will be implemented in the group. One, confidentiality and anonymity is essential and can only be violated if there is evidence of someone being harmed or intending to harm themselves or others. Two, there can be no dual relationships, particularly a romantic relationship between members. Three, this is a place of encouragement, meaning there is no profanity. Four, in order to keep order there should be no “cross-talk” meaning a private conversation between you and one person. And finally, there needs to be an encouragement to speak in “I statements”, stating what works for you instead of telling others what they should do, in order to remain supportive and not controlling (“5 Group Rules”,
