In Warriors Don’t Cry, Melba Pattillo Beals describes her arduous battle for racial equality in the brutal town of Little Rock, Arkansas in the late 1950s. When she was only twelve years old, Melba survived attempted rape by a white man. Scared and confused, Melba went home and told her family. However, they instructed her to keep quiet about the abuse because they believed getting the police involved would only make things worse. Unfortunately, thousands of sexual assaults still go unreported for a myriad of reasons, including distrust in law enforcement and the criminal justice system, the possibility that the abuser will not be punished, and victim blaming, a common occurrence in our society.
In 1991, President Bush Sr. was in office, the first Gulf War raged, and Thurgood Marshall, the first African American to be appointed to the United States Supreme Court, was leaving office. Women were earning 30% less than their male counterparts and just 33 women held positions in the U.S. Congress (“The Wage Gap Over Time,” 2016; Manning, Brudnick, & Shogan, 2015). Then, as now, conflicts between conservative and progressive values dominated the public conversation, and controversy plagued the President’s nomination to the Supreme Court, Clarence Thomas (“An Outline of the Hill/Thomas Controversy”). the middle of all this, Anita Hill, an attorney and professor from Oklahoma, spoke out about sexual harassment she experienced while working for Clarence Thomas. Hill’s choice to speak out ignited a national discussion about sexual harassment in the workplace, and fundamentally changed the narrative surrounding women who spoke out about unwanted sexual attention.
What is even more shocking being the number of women to this day that gets abused. "This ‘one in five’ statistic shouldn’t just be taken with a grain of salt but the entire shaker," said James Fox, professor of criminology, law and public policy at Northeastern University (Washington Post, 2014) The ‘one in five’ statistic he is speaking about is one in five women get sexually harassed in college (Obama, 2014). This small quote speaks humongous words. As it says in the quote, “one in five,” women get sexually harassed in college and that shows that women aren’t looked at as strong and agile people because
“ Because of white supremacy, white women are more likely than other women of color (WOC) to be believed and validated when disclosing sexual abuse, both online and in the real world”Neesha Powell
Writing can be an effective way in persuading an audience. Creating a connection to the audience is a difficult task, but if rhetorical writing is used correctly, one's writing can be impactful and effective. The authors, Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt, of "The Coddling of the American Mind" use rhetorical strategies to evoke interest, and to assist in bringing across meaning to the reader. Some of the effects used include data, quotes from ancient philosophers, and specific word connotation. The rhetorical strategies used by Haidt and Lukianoff are for the most part unsuccessful in convincing college administration that shielding students does more harm than good.
The attitude that women should not put themselves in situations or that what women wearing somehow encourages a rape, needs to be changed. Instead as a society we need to focus on not to rape, rather than how to prevent it from happening. Law enforcement is also an issue with the police department being comprised of mostly men it can be very embarrassing to talk about being a victim of such a heinous
Angela Davis demonstrates the ongoing violent abuse as she quotes a report on sexual maltreatment in women’s prisons, “We found that male correctional employees have vaginally, anally, and orally raped female prisoners and sexually assaulted and abused them” (Davis 78). However disturbing this blunt sexual contact that male officers take with the vulnerable prisoners may be, the officers adopt even more severe tactics to harass and abuse the women as they often utilize “mandatory pat-frisks or room searches to grope women 's breasts, buttocks, and vaginal areas...” (Davis 79). To add insult to injury, women are virtually incapable of escaping from their abuser(s). Prison employees upkeep their inappropriate behavior as it is believed they will “rarely be held accountable, administratively or criminally” (Davis 78).
During the times of the American Revolution, women gained a sense of self-identification, among other things. These times are important to women’s rights because this laid the foundation for the freedom and equality among sexes we come to know today. Women in the American Revolution gained new roles and discovered importance beyond the household duties of precious generations, by means of filling the gaps left by their husbands at war. Women participated in the American Revolution in ways that had not so much happened before in previous wars. One example is Deborah Champion being used to spread secret messages.
Did you know that there are roughly 165,824,620 women currently alive in the United States as of this year, women make up about 50.6% of the population? But did you also know that there are 219,000 women locked up in our current Criminal Justice System? Where nationally, we lock up 8 times the amount of woman than we do men. That’s a lot of mothers, daughters, sisters, and aunts locked up. Many of these woman that are currently incarcerated have at some point in their lives experienced some sort of mental, physical, and sexual abuse.
Sexual violence can affect anyone. There is no end all be all strategy to avoid any and all sexual violence. However, studies have shown that some people are more likely to be affected by sexual violence than others. Typically, the people most likely to be at risk of sexual violence are people who are disenfranchised, in prison where a whole different cultural dynamic exists and people who can’t care for themselves. Just a few of these groups are Native American women, male prisoners, and children.
The video No Justice for Alaskan and Native American Women by Amnesty International USA stated that “Native American and Alaskan women are 2 ½ times more likely to be raped, in fact 1 in 3 of these women will be raped in their lifetime” (“No Justice for Alaskan” 0:24). These numbers are outrageous and need to be addressed in order to help Native American Women and women around the
and Berland Associates from November of 2008, states that the majority of people in the United States view the treatment of women at home as equal to men, whereas in the press, workplace, political settings, or the armed forces, treatment does not remain equivalent in treatment (Scherer 26). Progress has made steady yet gradual milestones towards the goal regarding women’s rights, but when it comes to the question of when dramatic change should take place, “the time is now”
Today, I stand before you with a heavy heart, burdened by the prevalence of a dark and pervasive issue that continues to haunt our society: domestic violence. It is a topic that often remains shrouded in silence and secrecy, leaving countless individuals trapped in a cycle of fear, pain, and suffering. But today, we must raise our voices together and call for an end to this inhumane treatment. Domestic violence knows no boundaries. It transcends race, gender, age, and socioeconomic status.
Topic: There should be tougher law enforcement to protect against domestic violence. “The people who could do the most to improve the situation of so many victims being are in fact ourselves. It’s in our hand to stop domestic violence against each other” this statement was said by the famous actor Patrick Stewart. This statement is indeed correct. Domestic violence is an international problem which is everybody’s business even if one is not being abused.
