Dearest Mother, I hope all is well with you. I am still working in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Unfortunately, many of my parishioners have been afflicted with the Black Death, and I am afraid I will contract it. One of the most faithful families has just recently been infected with the Black Death. I had to perform Last Rites for them. I was so frightened by the potential danger of catching it, but I had to help the family. I performed it about a week ago, and I have not gotten any of the symptoms yet, such as a fever and a cough, nor have any black spots or bubas appeared. When I walk down the streets I see very frail people with the bubas on their necks all swollen. It is a very distressing sight, and especially for all the children. When the plague hit Paris, the first person I knew to get it was one elderly man, to whom I talked about once or twice. He lived on the street and would try to find someone’s house for shelter. He was a very nice man, but he was lonely and very poor. The man, unfortunately gave the Black Death to all of the nice families who let him sleep the night, and it has spread very quickly. Many victims of the Black Death have been sent away to keep the sickness away. Also, for as long as the Black Death lasts, one cannot go near the coast because the “corrupt” mists carry the plague. I have also seen many people bloodletting, to get all of the bad blood in them out. I am pretty sure that this is one of the most effective ways, though I am not a doctor. Being surrounded in foul smells is supposed to help as well because bad cures bad. I really hope the Black Death will… Sorry I just had another family ask me to do a First Right. I had to say no. I cannot help it.
