Liberal Education According To Uw Oshkosh

Liberal education it basically the goal of most university, including UW-Oshkosh. A liberal education provides students with the basic knowledge in multiple areas such as math, reading, writing, history, science. A liberal education has an end goal of producing a well rounded person who has basic skills in multiple areas in addition to a detailed education in one spastic area. In the end this is to basically produce a person who can be an active and productive member of society.

What do you think it should be? I think the idea of a liberal education is a great idea, however I think it falls short in the end. Its great to have well rounded educated people; as a little bit of knowledge can be a powerful thing. Unfortunately a liberal …show more content…

However I think if falls short on the part to actually prepare students for life in the real world. I started at the University of River Falls then latter transferred to the University of Oshkosh, I’m a physical education major. In order to graduate I have had to take a lot of classes I felt were a waist of my time, and not enough classes to prepare me for life after college. Classes such as art history, I understand the University believes this class will help me be a well rounded educated person, however I was only requited to take a basic math class, which did not talk about important mathematical topics such as loans, interests, budgeting, balancing a check book, or debt. I strongly believe that learning more math topics such as those would have greatly helped me understand more when I bought my first house or my first car, or got my first credit card, or opened my own business. My husband who went to a two year technical school to become a desalt mechanic was required to take a math class for mechanics which had a unit that covered loans, interest, balancing a check book, debt, and budgeting. This is just one way I think UW-Osh has fallen short of a true liberal
