College Admissions Essay: Hope College As A Liberal Arts Education

The Person to Be When I complete my final year here, I hope that I can say that I have gotten everything out of Hope College as a liberal arts school that I could imagined I would. This essay serves to remind myself what those hopes were when I was as a Freshman in my very first semester of college. After learning about the liberal arts and Hope College’s purpose as a liberal arts college, there are several goals that I personally would like to achieve by the time I graduate from this school in four years. I would like to see that I have a deeper understanding of the world, the people in the world, and see more confidence in myself after I graduate. In the Hope College Philosophy of Education, it quotes the “Covenant of Mutual Responsibilities” and says this: Hope College wants to be a place that will “liberate the minds, enhance the discernment, enlarge the sympathies, and encourage the commitments of all students entrusted to (it).” My understanding of this goal is that students, like me, will leave Hope College with open minds that are sensitive to the differences between individuals and cultures, and that is exactly what I want for myself. I want to appreciate and use the knowledge I know to understand other perspectives and beliefs that do not always follow with my own. I also want to be sensitive to people’s differences and treat people with differences correctly. Already I have been trying to do this in my encounter with cultures class this semester when we went on our last immersion trip to see the Gregory Boyle, author of Tattoos on the Heart, speak about his Industry and speak of his beliefs and perspective on gang intervention. While I sat there listening to him speak about all this, I couldn’t help but think about my perspective on this subject.
