Applying Open Mindedness at Lake Land College
There are many practices that new students can adopt to help them be more successful at Lake Land College. They arrive at Lake Land College prepared in book learning but need guidance on how to be successful in college. I believe the practice of open mindedness is the single most important skill students can adopt to be successful in their educational career. By the time students start their study at Lake Land College they have already formed their vision of the world, their personality, and they have their own personal views on various topics. Apart from the fact that Lake Land College is an institution where students receive education, Lake Land College is also a place where a student gains practical and personal experiences interacting with other students. If a new student is closed-minded, he or she can find it extremely difficult to communicate with students who have different views or ideas. Students who keep an open mind will explore different perspectives from their classmates.
Students can also practice being open-minded by exposing themselves to new ideas. For example, a student might join into a conversation that they would not normally join. Doing this, the student may learn something new, or they may even contribute to teaching another student a different perspective. This applies to local students as well as students with different backgrounds, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. As a college freshman, this could be the first opportunity young learners have to interact with students from multiple diverse backgrounds who do not necessarily have the same values, morals, or political beliefs. The blending culture occurs in almost every classroom at Lake Land College. Having an open mind is vital for obtaining diverse experiences and assists in preparing a student for independent life in general. In difficult tasks, open-mindedness allows a person to find the most optimal and creative way leading to its fulfillment. The Practice of open-mindedness finds a way out of most complex situations that occur in learning and in life. Students will begin to see new opportunities that were previously unsuitable because of personal prejudices or conservatism. With a close mind, students may deem certain problems annoying.
