The opportunity to participate in summer research would be a wonderful experience, especially here at Hope College. As a geology major, Hope’s vast variety of summer research programs is one of the reasons why I chose to attend Hope. Research is an experience that many undergraduates do not have the opportunity to participate in, which is unfortunate, because I believe it is important to take part in an opportunity like this.
A vital part of research is the ability to work under the mentorship of a faculty member. Working closely with a faculty member, who I look up to, is certainly a motivation to apply for this opportunity. The professors that I have already met within the geology department at Hope College have surprised me with their willingness to go out of their way to help a student. These professors have amazed me with their knowledge, and they have certainly become an inspiration to me. Working with such wise and intelligent faculty will broaden and expand my own knowledge.
This research program will allow me to grow not only as a scientist but also as a person because I will be able to sharpen my skills. This will be done through critical thinking, teamwork, and communication. Research is a great way to strengthen what I have learned in a classroom.

Since I would like to be an environmental consultant, it is important for me to learn specific researching skills. These skills include critical thinking, teamwork, and communication skills. Environmental consultants are constantly given new projects in which they must come up with a solution for. They are often asked to do research and analyze data in order to solve a certain environmental issues. Environmental consultants must be able to interpret data and present their results orally.
