I want to participate in the SHIP program because it offers a great opportunity to further my skills and knowledge in the biomedical field. After taking biology and chemistry courses at my school, I discovered my passion for technology also intersects with medicine and biology. Last year, I enjoyed learning the language R and applying it to real data with a team. In SHIP, I hope to gain more hands-on experience working in labs and build on skills I already know such as data analysis, computer simulation, experimental design, etc., which I will use in the future. While good team chemistry is essential to a successful team, I know this doesn’t happen immediately. Having worked in multiple club boards at school, I’ve learned how to make environments more easygoing and a space for people to become more than colleagues. I’m not afraid to embarrass myself or make mistakes if it means making it feel okay for others to mess up too. While focusing on the tasks at hand, I also love to joke around and get to know the people around me because getting to know each other is the ultimate reward of working together. Besides my team player attributes, I am always open to learning new things. With this, I love developing new skills for the betterment of the team. I recently taught myself how to utilize advanced excel functions for a calculus project, which I enjoyed learning and carried this skill to my club's fundraiser too. I often feel like this skill has become more of a side hobby than a talent at school due to a lack of opportunity to demonstrate it. In my friend group, I fall into the tech nerd archetype. Although I always saw it embarrassingly, I became a reliable helper. At home, I’m known as the “tech guy,” and I love helping my sisters and parents. This passion of mine originally started with video games as I found a strong interest in building a computer to play games with friends. Though it required a lot of learning, I always put in the work to educate myself and do the research. From there, I realized how much I enjoyed troubleshooting and problem-solving. It comes with much frustration, but the result is the most rewarding. Though my career path is undecided, I know that I'll be working with computers and technology.
