Licenses are required for many different things, whether it be breeding dogs, fishing, or driving. Yet there has not been any interest in enforcing a parenting license. Do you recall ever seeing some individuals treating their children in ways that you would have never imagined? You think to yourself and ask mentally, “Why do they act that way?” and then wish you could do something but, you know that either way the child’s parents will still continue to act immature. I personally have seen events like these occur and I hate to see the child suffering and having to endure the immature acts of their parents. There will always be sick people who find some twisted way to get a child under their grasp and abuse them, but for the most part, you can weed out unsuitable people who cannot or will not take good care of children. Some people have kids for the sole reason that it is the norm to get married, settle down, and have children. Cases like these are terrible because the mothers don’t truly want to be moms, they just go through parenthood because they feel like they’re supposed to. These types of people are super likely to abuse their kids because they are so unhappy with the situation that they brought upon themselves. In addition, by just simply looking into someone’s criminal history and not letting them adopt or legally have kids if they’re unsuitable you could save a child from a life of abuse and/or neglect. For example, rapists, murderers, and child sex offenders. There’s a lot of other crimes that are debatable too. Of course, you shouldn’t be deemed unworthy to have a kid if you shoplift a pencil, but why would we allow kids under the care of adults who have molested children? Agencies go through extremely lengthy background checks and procedures to make sure families are prepared and healthy enough to take on a child, yet nobody bats an eyelash when it comes to people having children on their own. Length and numbers of classes would obviously be decided by the government but if it was just a few that taught you valuable things like CPR, decision making, how to change a diaper, dealing with teens doing drugs, etc, it could be extremely helpful. One could argue that requiring a license to be able to parent is going too far and only seems realistic in a dystopian novel but really, too much of anything is a bad thing. Situations with good intents can easily go too far and be ruined. However, parenting licenses don’t have to become a bad thing. It doesn’t have to be a troublesome process that everyone loathes since it is so much work to have a child. Establishing logical answers for who can have a child or not would be important to the system; mandatory parenting licenses wouldn’t have to feel like the government is controlling your every move. Instead, the process of getting background checks and taking classes to make sure you’re educated can be a wonderful and beneficial
