My teacher asked me what person am I going to do for black history month, and I told her Marian Anderson. About half the class said, “who?, what?, who is that?”. Marian Anderson should be a name that everyone should know. She has made made many accomplishments in her singing career that made a difference in history. Marian Anderson was born February 27, 1897 in Philadelphia. Even when she was young, her parents noticed that her voice was special. They wanted her to take lesson but couldn’t afford it, so her church helped raise money for her to attend a music school. Anderson was the oldest of three girls. At six years of age, she joined her church choir and earned the nickname , Baby Contralto, due to her unique voice. Anderson’s father died at the age of twelve, but that did not stop her from singing. Throughout her singing career, she has made many accomplishments. For one, she is best remembered for her contralto, or low singing voice. Anderson was the first African American to sing at the white house. She was also the first African American to sing with New York’s Metropolitan Opera. At the age of twenty-tree, Anderson entered a competition and won first place out of 300 contestants. Anderson sang for former president Franklin Delano Roosevelt. She also sang for Great Britain's king George IV.
