Life Changing There comes a point in time where everyone’s life changes. It may change for the better, or it may change for the worse. It could be a small minute modification or it could be a history making event. The death of a family member, a breakup in an intimate relationship, a transition in a job, or even meeting an idol are all life changing events. The lives that these events effect often never return to how they were before. In his book The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the character of James Gatz to showcase a change in persona that occurs when a poor man, with extraordinary goals, meets the “love of his life”. However, over time he fell in love with Daisy, in particular, Daisy’s voice. Nick concludes after some thinking that her voice “was full of money, [money] was the inexhaustible charm that rose and fell” whenever she spoke (120). Men are drawn to the plea for money that is heard along with Daisy’s voice. After falling in love, Gatsby was never the same. He no longer strives for things unimaginable. James Gatz underwent a change where in the end as Jay Gatsby, his life is less fulfilling. Gatsby no longer thinks about things that are extraordinary. After the change Nick finds Jay Gatsby “talk[ing] a lot about the past and [Nick] gathered that [Gatsby] wanted to recover something, some idea of himself perhaps, that had gone into loving Daisy. His life had been confused and disordered since…" the day he fell in love with Daisy (110). Gatsby’s life no longer fulfills his hopes, and after falling in love, his mind never dreams about the impossible. Instead, he dreams about what it would be like to turn back the hands of time.
