The dark ages were the period between approximately 500-1500 A.D. It began shortly after the demise of the Roman Empire and it came to its conclusion once the Renaissance in Italy began to surface. It is labeled the dark ages by numerous scholars because during this period there was a shortage of literary and scientific studies. Other scholars believe that the label is false and the term dark ages is not an accurate description of this time. However, it was not branded the dark ages due to just it’s lack of literary and scientific advancements. The Year 1000 offers an accurate description of what life was like at the turn of the first millennium. This time should be branded as the dark ages not only because of its lack of study in literacy and science, but for scandalous activity that took place. During the dark ages Feudalism was the commanding political system which meant that it was difficult for a person from the lower class to advance into the higher classes and become a leader in the society. The main religion at the time was Catholicism. The church gained more and more power by the day which had an immediate effect on every social class.
