What was life like back at home during war time in 1940? Although there was a war going on, people on the homefront did their best to live a normal life, as well as help with the war. Many people had family in the war so trying to be positive and go on with their life was not the easiest thing to do. However, everyday things such as music and other entertainments help them get through this rough time. The 1940´s were full of a variety of entertainment such as music, theatre, and recreation. The music in the 1940s was not the same as the music today. The most popular type of music was swing. Swing music was usually performed by Big Bands, which are bands with ten or more people with four sections (Pearson). The four sections included saxophones, trumpets, trombones and rhythm, or piano, bass, drums, and guitar. Some of the swing artist are The Andrew Sisters, Mill brothers, Sammy Kaye´s, and many more (Pearson). Another type of music was Hillbilly, or Folk and Blue, now called country. Country music blew up because of the film ¨Singing Cowboy¨ staring Roy Rogers. At the beginning of the war all of the theaters were closed and were later reopened. At the time all the movies were played in black and white and had very poor quality (¨Popular pastimes and entertainment in the second world war¨). Most of the shows were matinee, played in the daytime, or evening shows. The theater would also feature plays, ballets, and operas.
