“It’s a story of tragedy.but it is good to find a beam of light in it, a beam of hope.” Says Holocaust survivor, Arge Ephrath. It is important to find light in dark situations because without hope, friendship, and determination, the people in the Holocaust would have died for nothing. Although there is no doubt that the Holocaust was a terrible and horrific time in history, people found hope and friendship, giving them reasons to continue on. In dreadful circumstances, distractions are an effective way to get a person’s mind off of the bad, and love and joy can occur along with those distractions. In his speech about his experience during the Holocaust, Elie Wiesel expresses his hope that the people that passed away would be remembered, along with the people who survived. The Jews that had so much darkness in their lives knew there was hope they wouldn’t be forgotten. Throughout his speech, Wiesel makes it clear that if we don’t remember what happened, the people that died would have died for nothing and the tragedy that was the Holocaust would have a higher chance of being repeated. He had hope that the Jews that were subject to the torture and genocide would always be commemorated and remembered. When people didn’t listen or pay attention to the people that would speak out against the Holocaust, they just supported it, keeping it alive and thriving, which is something Wiesel explains. He understood, along with few others, that if no one did anything about the genocide and torture of many people, the bad would just continue to grow and there would be no stopping it. The Jews that were left uncaptured kept archives and records of Judaism and the events that occurred during the time of the Holocaust, in the hope that in the future, these records would be found and recovered, and people would know the truth about what was going on. Without the hope they had, the people during this time would have given up, and there would be little reason to keep going. The horrific things that were going on during the time of the Holocaust would not have been stopped if people had no hope or determination. Although they were terrified and miserable, there were things that they found to get them through this and to continue on. The longing and determination for better days was there for them, and many did not give up, making it easier to find light and to look to the future. There was much darkness, hardship, and horror, but the light was still found. Without the light that was found, there would be no escape from the horrible event and there would be a possibility of it continuing. Without hope, there wouldn’t be anything stopping Hitler and the Nazi regime. Without the determination of the people that helped end this terrible time, many more people would’ve died and we wouldn’t have the understanding and the knowledge we have today about the Holocaust. There are many reasons hope, determination, and love were found in the darkness, no matter how terrible the situation had
