Having a job teaches many levels of life lessons. In the story “One Last Time”, Gary Soto and his family grew up as an immigrant family. They worked on the fields and factories to help make a living. Gary worked around Fresno, picking grapes, oranges, plums, peaches, and cotton. He talks about how his mother would provide them with the necessities but that meant they had to work extra hard. A job can teach you how to set goals and work towards achieving them effectively. Although Gary and his family didn't make much money, he learns how to budget and save his money in order to buy things he wants.
We can learn work ethic and responsibility from a job or career.

Throughout the story, Gary shows he takes pride in his work and is committed to providing for his family, or else he would have given up. Despite the physical and emotional pain Gary is feeling he is determined to finish his job to help his family. Soto wants his family to know how hard he is working and how much he cares for them. He knows in his heart that his mother, stepfather, and siblings work hard to provide for him. Gary wouldn't work in his condition if he didn't love his family so
