The theme that I decided was most dominant when working on the graphics assignment was “The Will to Live”. On the other hand, the theme that was decided to be the most dominant when working on the Pi’s life at sea assignment was “The Savagery of Survival”. These themes, though quite similar in ways, are not the same and the reason why I think they were chosen differently is because of context. When I decided which theme was most important in Life of Pi, I was basing it off of the whole book, whereas when we did it as a group, we were basing it off the time spent at sea. Also, we were basing it off of Pi’s activities alone and not anyone else's (ex: Richard Parker or orangutan). Likewise, when the group decided on the most dominant theme, there …show more content…
The will to survive is also what allows for Pi to survive while at sea and is not only present in Pi, but all people and even animals such as Richard Parker. I thought that my theme was dominant because it can relate to almost all of the activities that Pi does while on the boat. Similarly, my group thinks the dominant theme is “The Savagery of Survival” and this is because even though the will to survive may be present in all activities that Pi does, it may not be the most important theme related to it. One has to narrow in on the activity and choose which theme it represent the most because something that Pi or even an animal does could be seen as multiple themes. For example, killing for Pi could be related to the will to live, rituals, and the savagery of survival, but the most important one is the savagery of survival. The will to live is too general to be seen as the most important theme. It would only be seen as the most important if the activity Pi does only relates to it. For example, leaving the algae island only relates to the will to live (Pi wanted to live a life in civilization) and thus that must be the most important for that
