Life as we knew it took place in a small town in Pennsylvania. The main setting takes place at the Evans family residence. The setting definitely affects the story because during the winter Pennsylvania becomes very cold so that becomes a challenge for survival. Also the town is not near any major bodies of water so when changes in tides are created by the moon the town is not affected so significantly.
Life as we knew it is a science fiction book about a meteoroid colliding with the moon and pushing the moon off of its axis. The moon being repositioned creates massive geographic and natural disasters including tsunamis, earthquakes, floods, droughts and snow storms. Miranda is over all an average teenage girl, but she later becomes extremely skinny much like the rest of her family because of the lack of food. She is sixteen years old and has a bit of a temper towards her mother, she also lives her mom and two brothers. Miranda is very considerate of others and is always trying to put others first. “‘Countries?’ I said. Somehow I’d forgotten there were other countries, that we shared the moon with other countries.” (Chapter 3, p. 28) Another important character is Miranda’s mother Laura. Mrs. Evens is divorced and has three children, Miranda, Matt, and Jonny. She is also very considerate of others and is constantly starving herself to make sure her kids have “enough” food. Megan used to be Miranda’s best friend. Megan is a very religious person, and she starved herself to death when food was scarce and problems were arising to prove her loyalty to her god. Megan helps Miranda come to terms with the circumstances but she also angers Miranda because Megan is fighting for her life as much as she should …show more content…

She is mostly negative and annoyed about the situation. Miranda doesn’t understand why this catastrophic event is happening to her and her family. With her telling the story you are experiencing the struggles and hardships of living in these circumstances first hand. I believe that the choice of Miranda narrating gets the authors message across because she able to write and tell the reader about what her family those around are experiencing.
One of the main themes was that no matter what happens you have to push through and see the silver lining. I think this means that no matter what life throws at you if you push through you can make it through the struggle and begin on your next chapter. Another theme is persistence pays off. This means that if you try hard enough to achieve your goals it will pay off in the long
