Life of Pi’s True Story What drives a story believable? Is it the way it’s told, the length, or the amount of detail? Oodles of people may start to think that more details are the structure of a lie, but this is not the case. The first story is the truth and the second story is a lie to try and appease the Japanese men. The three conditions that will coerce you agree with the statement above include the second story, the Japanese men, and finally some reasons the first story is true. Firstly the second story isn’t true for a whole slew of separate reasons, including the plot similarities and the amount of time it takes him to think it up. Several, including the Japanese men, had doubts about his first story including the fact that bananas don’t float, which turned out to be true. Some also doubt that the island for reasons like “...no one else has come upon it.” (Martel 294) but Pi says that no one believed the Americas were real until Columbus found it. The men also say that the island is “...botanically impossible.”(Martel 294) to which Pi then replies “Said the fly just before landing in the venus flytrap.” (Martel 294) A greater percent of the population only believe what they can observe and what has already been, and the maximum percent can’t accept the new even when it could be true. 600 years ago everyone knew the Earth was flat, but they were proven wrong when Christopher Columbus sailed across the ocean, proving that large numbers of people won’t accept something until scientists officially say it. The men even continue on to say that no scientist would believe you, to which Pi replies “These would be the same who dismissed Copernicus and Darwin.” (Martel 294) which means that scientists can be wrong exceedingly often. In summary, the first story is true due to even though several doubt that conditions like this are possible, it still is
