Before this time, women were treated as property and did not have their own voices in politics and their personal lives. With the start of the 20th century, women yearned for a change. They wore shorter dresses, became more reckless, and took control of their lives. F. Scott Fitzgerald was a renowned author during the 1920s who provided commentary about the changes of women.
The New Modern Era of 1920s When people think of the 1920's, the phrase "The Roaring Twenties" usually comes to mind. It was a time when more people lived in the cities than on farms (Hoover). A time where the role women had on society took a huge turn for the better. The image of the flapper came to life as it portrayed how the young woman was seen across the nation. Some issues that women had in the 1920's are related to some of the issues women have today.
The 1920’s in America is often considered as “The Roaring Twenties. World War I was over, women got suffrage, fashion changed immensely, prohibition was put into place, and jazz filled the air. The Roaring ‘20s was a decade of play and prosperity. Unemployment was low and Americans were better off financially. After World War I, America wanted to return to normal.

Woman gained the freedom to vote with the 19th Amendment being added to the Constitution in 1920. There was access to credit and people would buy things with money

America needed to recover and with it youth rebelled against the norms of the older generations.
In the 1920s fashion was a movement of freedom with flappers, bobbed hairstyles and using art as a fashion statement. “Fashion should be stylish and fun,” (Twiggy). In any decade fashion was a way of saying something. One of the women’s careers was being in the fashion industry.
After World War 1, the 1920s was often referred to as the Roaring ‘20s. It was known as this because of the sustained economic prosperity during this time period. Consequently, with the economic prosperity came with major political, social, economic, technological, and cultural developments of the 1920s. The “Roaring Twenties” can be considered as a time of many advancements that helped shape the lives of Americans on a large scale. For instance, one of the social developments in the 1920s was that people longed for a simpler life.

These developments created new changes and helped shape the ways of life of the American people. Women played a significant example in social changes. From improvements in the education system, to minor developments such as the changes in attire. Another major development was economic production.
Despite this, women were able to make a huge impact on America through social reforms. Many young women went against the beliefs of their parents. Prior to the Roaring Twenties, America was in a Victorian era. Women wore dresses that were floor-length, their hair was long and premarital sex was almost non-existent. During the 1920’s however, some women became what are known as “flappers”.
In this aspect, the 1920s were one of the most influential decades in U.S. history because of the introduction of the "New Women". "New Women," or flappers, were young women who embraced the new ideas, freedoms, and modernism of the Roaring Twenties. Flappers wore new and popular clothing from the era. Their signature look was short "bob" hair, which represented their independence to men. A majority of flappers were women's suffrage activist.
Fashion During this decade, it were common to wear clothes that were made of polyester and had bright colors both for men and women. A popular accessory for both women and men were the bangle bracelet, but women often used it more and they were thicker than they are today. During this decade a lot of popular hairstyles existed some examples are The Shag”, The Feathered Look, Straight and Sleek, Facial Hair and The Pageboy. Music Popular genres were Disco, Pop, Progressive Rock, Punk Rock, Funk and Soul.
Apart from King's Road, another area of London attracted fashion victims from everywhere: Carnaby Street. In the late 50s, it would have been full of young ordinary working men that would have sorted themselves out into cliques: The Teddy boys and the Rockers. Come the 60s; it was home to the Mods, Skinheads and Punks. Men's and women's clothing could now meet into unisex outfits expected to be worn by either sex.
The twenties have been surely a fascinating duration. This time period became coined the Roaring 1920s. Women experimented with unique patterns, makeup, and hairstyles. Flappers wore quick skirts and defied conventional values. Pop subculture and media have been born.
