The point of view of the novel is in first person and is narrated through the voice of the main protagonist, Alex. The point of view is not reliable because it is subjective towards one side of the argument. Alex views the totalitarian state as a manipulative organization that blocks the citizens from seeing the increasing rate of crimes performed by the young generations. He also believes that each individual should be allowed to do whatever they please because it is in human nature to behave mischievously. In the novel, Alex states, “ ‘Me, me, me. How about me? Where do I come into all this?’... ‘Am I just to be like a clockwork orange?’ ’’(part 2, ch. 7, page 141). The state should allow people to choose their own paths and not herd them through. Since the novel is written in first person many of the important ideas are received through the mind of Alex. Through Alex’s experience in prison, the reader can clearly see that the government will try anything to keep in control of their citizens even if it means to torture them. During the prison chapters, the reader sees Alex being tortured by the state in order for them to keep control of their crime rates that are increasing exponentially. It is towards the end of these chapters that Alex begs for mercy and pleads for them to stop the experiments. By having one perspective narrating the whole story, the author creates a more personal connection between Alex and the reader. The reader can spot the many flaws that the protagonist has while still develop some sympathy towards a villainous rapist and murderer. For example when his old friend Dim and his enemy Billyboy beat him up, the audience can’t help but feel sympathy towards him because the audience has already seen the tragedies he already has gone
