The story of, Piper Kerman, relates to what we learn in this course about female offenders. The show “Orange is the New Black” is about a nice blond white lady whose life change dramatically when she was arrested for conspiracy drug charges and heroin trafficking that occurred several years prior. Not like many prisoners, Kerman comes from well-educated family. She is the last person anyone would expect to see in prison (Sullivan, 2015). She got to experience first had on how the criminal justice works and see how women in prison go through every day. She acknowledges that living in prison is not an easy life and it can sometimes be brutal. She experiences women inmates be sexually abuse, be humiliated, and treated poorly by guards. However, in women prisons, they have little access to education, work and training. In male prisons are given far more programs than women prisons (Belknap, 2015). Kerman had to practically beg the counselor and warden to have an educational program available for them. It took them some time to agree on it, but where more concern how much it would cost than the advantages it will have for the inmates. As of now, there are few programs available to women in prison. If programs; such as, drug treatment, counseling, and employment training be available, it can help those women incarcerated have a higher possibility to find a job, be mental and physically stable, and provided from themselves. In the show, inmates prefer to stay in prison because they think it is a better lifestyle for them instead of living in the streets. Women who are release into society face a lot of obstacles. Some of the obstacles are because of the offenders' past experiences and others caused by being incarceration, which cause them to have difficulty in transitioning back into society. The challenges women face at the time of their release, includes trying to find a place to stay, trying to find their family or children, and have no money. Therefore, start to commit crimes again. But, if the correctional facilities provide women with programs to help them find a job, how to apply to jobs, how to write a resume, life skills classes, and job training can help women have a higher chance to not return to prison again. In the show, an inmate was given a chance to return into the community, but did not want to because she thought her life was going to be worse than it already is in prison.
