With the rise of the feminist movement in the West in 18th century, women prisoners become the social group which is paid increasing attention to. Since the past decades, the women imprisonment has becoming one of the most pressing issues on the penal system. Because of the explosion of women prisoners’ population, the prisons have been gendered and the amount of women’s prisons has experienced a sharp increase. In October 2006, the amount of women prisons reached at 4,447 and have been risen more quickly than man prisons, almost trebling in 1993 (Canadino and Dignan, 2007:355).
