In this essay I will compare and contrast irony and paradox using Like the Sun and The Open Window. The definition of irony is the effect created when a writer sets up contrasts between readers or characters expectations and reality. The definition of paradox is a statement that seems contradictory but actually reveals a deeper truth. First, I will show some examples of paradox in Like the Sun. In this story someone decides to tell the full truth for the whole day. The paradox is thet the truth can be a bad thing. The person in the story makes his wife mad by telling her that her cooking is bad, one of his friends asks him how he feels about a guy that passed away and he told his friend that the guy that passed away was a selfish brute, and then his boss asks him how is singing is and he says it is bad. At the time she wasnt there but her daughter was and she lies to him about her dad and brother and the dog going and hunting but then the place where they go gets flooded and they havent seen them for three years and they leave the window open in Octobers hoping they will come back. Then Mrs Sappleton comes and tells them why they leave the window open. That day they come home and the guy runs away with his condiion worse.
