In the chapter “Growing up tethered”, a chapter from the book ‘Alone Together’, written by Sherry Turkle is a chapter that talks about the how modern society has changed because of cell phones more specifically young teens. In this chapter, the author approaches her argument by using the rhetorical appeal. In the first couple of pages, the author uses ethos for her argument. Turkle is using ethos by showing her values, morals, and credibility to the topic. She identifies the problem between children, parents, and cells phones which shows the readers that she has a good judgment.
Salvador Rodriguez’s tale of a broken relationship emphasizes the struggle to disconnect from someone on social media. By Rodriguez explaining the heartbreak and sadness he felt every time he saw his ex’s name, it made me sympathize with him. Through this sympathy, it made me understand his situation more and agree with the argument. Using personal stories will make the author seem more qualified to have an opinion on the subject and people are more likely to agree with them. By providing evidence, especially one from personal experience, their argument will sound more solid.
The author, Richard Louv, write on how children now have become much too engaged in technology world and that they don't pay attention to nature enough. During this passage, tries to persuade his audience to reconnect with nature and reduce their use of technology and inform how technology has changed people. He uses his appeal to wistfulness, anecdotes, and rhetorical questions to achieve his purpose. In this passage, an appeal to wistful emotion is used.
A 2014 Pew Research Center poll found that one out of four cell phone owners in an intimate relationship found their partner too distracted by their cell phone. One out of ten had argued with a partner about excessive cell phone usage. In the book Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury suggests that technology can affect intimate relationships and alter people’s sense of trust and reality. This theme reflects on modern times as well, similar to how we live our modern lives, sometimes holding hands with technology rather than our loved ones. Bradbury elaborates on a future where technology is advanced enough to bring digital people to life, making them seem genuine and trustworthy while also calling them ‘family’.

Nicholas Carr wrote the literary piece “ The Shallows” in which Carr explains his views on how the internet is hurting human beings rather than helping them. A few points that Carr goes into detail about, are how the internet is causing the attention span of average people to slowly decay. Carr also explains that due to the internet, people are tending to skim through what they are reading rather than reading the full text they are searching for the key points in each price of writing. Additionally Carr points out that the internet is causing relationships between people are becoming weaker due to the lack of face to face interactions between each other.
In her essay, “I Had a Nice Time with you Tonight, on the app,” Jenna Wortham believes that social media apps are a helpful way to connect. Wortham swears by apps and is grateful that she can communicate with her boyfriend who is three thousand miles away. Yet some may challenge the view that Social Media apps are a reliable and effective method of communicating, Sherry Turkle stresses people are substituting online communication for face-to-face interaction. Although Turkle may only seem of concern to only a small group of people, it should in fact concern anyone who cares about the negative effects social media can have on people. In her eyes, nothing can replace person-to-person communication.
