I agree with your post Brian. Foss delivered his speech confidently with facts you can't ignore. Usually when someone commits a crime it's easy to label them as "a delinquent" or a bad person in general. What people tend to overlook however, is the reasoning behind those actions. I really appreciate that Foss as a prosecutor, is someone who is adamant about changing lives for individuals before they suffer to the hands of a system that needs help itself.
In Aaron Copland’s “How We Listen” Copland addresses the “three planes of listening,” sensory, expressive, and musical. Copland digresses onto the topic of the sensuous plane and described it as, “the simplest way of listening to music.” So then, wouldn’t every initial earful of any song be filed under the plane of “sensory”? Mindlessly tuning in, but consciously checking to see if the pros outweigh the cons, so that one can determine whether or not it’s worth another listen. He then projects onto the “expressive plane” and explains that individuals attempt to tie the known, to music.
According to Webster’s dictionary, “Audism is discrimination or prejudice against individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing,” but the idea of audism goes far beyond this definition. Audism also involves the notion that someone feels superior on their ability to hear. Furthermore, they believer that not being able to hear leads to a futile and miserable life. Thus, the belief that a hearing person is superior to a deaf person, and that a deaf person’s life is a miserable one leads to a negative stigma toward those unable to hear.
In the words of M Scott Peck, “By far the most important form of attention we can give our loved ones is listening… True listening is love in action.” The importance of listening to what others have to say is great deal, it is one of the most common ways humans interact with one another. It is also one of the many skills that is considered to be necessary in life, especially when it comes to communicating with someone important such as your loved ones. Listening isn’t utterly about being there, but it is also about support and showing how much you care.

In Thomas Lux's poem, “The Voice You Hear When You Read Silently,” the idea of a mental voice when reading is the process of creating meaning in a written text. Lux uses symbolism and imagery to make his message both powerful and beautiful. The vocabulary and explanations that he uses initiates a sincere and meaningful tone. Lux believes that the reader is the most important part of a written piece’s interpretation. The reader’s mental voice includes that individual's outlook, experience, and feeling.

The use of the colors are significant because each color symbolizes something different. One of the colors that is symbolized is green. The fifth habit is “seek first to understand, the to be understood”. It is based on communication and its importance. Covey says that it the most important skill in life and so it is listening. People are always trying to say what they want to say, and they are that much focus on it, that they do not pay attention to what other person wants to communicate.
In The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane, the quote has significance because it represents the loss of fear and innocence in Henry and “the youth”. Henry is a soldier that had wanted to be a war hero, but when he came to the time of battle he became a coward. He was ashamed of how he had acted and lied about his actions to protect his reputation. In the following battle he was no longer himself, he had fallen asleep and woken up a knight (chapter 19). In the book, Henry represents the youth everywhere while they are in a scary situation.
Pico Iyer’s “The Joy of Quiet” article in the New York Times begins with the awareness of the effects of Internet infested electronics. Acknowledging that the technology available to individuals today can be helpful, he also mentions the effects of it can be quite dramatic. For instance, Iyer explains how a night at Post Ranch Inn will charge customers extra just to receive a room with no television. Individuals have to force themselves to peel away and distract themselves from their devices with things that may not even pertain to their interests. While being so preoccupied with what’s going on in the world or with what friends are doing, individuals overlook the fact that they are not focusing on the essential– living life.
An acceptable listener is a person who is able to put aside their thoughts and opinions in order to digest someone else’s views that are possibly different. However, the person can retain their own opinions even after listening, but for that moment they had an open mind during the discussion. In “On Communication”, Bohm is trying to manifest the readers why listening is critical. Bohm states that “communication can lead to the creation of something new only if people are able to freely listen to each other, without prejudice and without trying to influence each other.” In that statement, it is clear that Bohm is telling the importance of listening to one another.
Reflection on the 5-Days Journey to Become a Better Listener Throughout the 5-days practice of active listening and basic attending skills in daily conversations, it was easiest for me to practice empathy. I found it easy to perceive the situation through others’ eyes and perspectives in order to capture the accurate meaning when I was nonjudgemental and listened attentively to others. As a result, I was able to develop empathic rapport in which I accurately sensed and understood others’ concerns as well as feelings as compared to when I conversed without empathy, allowing my presumptions to affect my interpretation of others’ meaning due to the need for others to agree with my worldview.
