When I think of literacy, my first thought used to go straight to my literature class (for example, reading and writing), but that is not the only thing that literacy is. The person I interviewed is a college freshman, and he creates electronic beats on Soundcloud, which is a music streaming platform that lets people listen to and create music. During our interview, we discussed how literacy defined as the ability to learn and understand has a direct relation to his creation of music and his daily life. The decision about what music means to someone and what kind of music they want to listen to depends solely on the individual. Regardless of whether the individual wants to listen to music or to create it, music inspires people to express and reflect on their emotions. What I want to get across is that music creates a way for someone to do things in a more positive and fun way. For example, when I was younger, I played basketball on a school team, and I would always be extremely nervous and anxious before a game. When we would start to warm up, they would start playing music like “We Will Rock You” by Queen and “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor. These songs are energetic and have so much passion behind their words that they make people excited and want to smile. After listening to these songs, it was like all my anxiety slipped away, and I felt free just to play and focus on myself and my team. These songs are a prime example as to what a song can make someone do. It can change someone’s mindset in a blink of an eye into something more positive that lets them experience every moment to the
