Literary Analysis Essay Of The Great Gatsby By Devan Wagner The Great Gatsby shares an impactful message in its story, representing the American dream and the perfect life. However, in reality, it’s the complete opposite. The perfect life is faced with hardships & challenges and can evaporate the concept of the American dream. Speaking of hardships & challenges, there’s a quote in the story on page 189 that states, “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.” (Gatsby, 189) This quote to me represents the idea that no matter what you try to do to get to the concept of the American dream, those hardships, whether big or small, will stick with you no matter what, and they could …show more content…

I’m sure he needed to reflect and get some help about the challenges he faced, but it was clear that he didn’t want to. Throughout the story, Nick’s main challenge is Gatsby. From the moment he heard of Gatsby, to Gatsby’s funeral, Nick had no clear perception of Gatsby and didn’t know what to think of him. From a suspicion of Gatsby being a German spy in World War I, as mentioned on Pg.48 from Lucile, one of the two yellow-dressed girls at Nick’s first party Gatsby’s, to several mentions of him being an Oxford man, and those rather dubious phone calls he got from Chicago & Philadelphia, Gatsby’s full story just didn’t seem to add up. Plus, it didn’t help that along with the main challenge of Gatsby's whole truth, he had to deal with many different kinds of people, such as Tom Buchanan and his… equivocal love for Daisy. Speaking of Daisy, Nick also had to handle helping get Daisy & Gatsby back together. You see, before World War I, Daisy & Gatsby were in love, but Gatsby was sent to the war, and Daisy never heard from him… until it was a little too late when Tom Buchanan came in and both he & Daisy got married.
