Final Fiction Analysis Essay Analyzing the short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” written by Flannery O’ Connor. O’ Connor makes it obvious to the reader that every matter in this story including the characters are symbols. There are also many themes that shape the plot, setting and characters of this story. You will be introduced to themes like comedy, horror, religion, manipulation, and most importantly good vs evil. In the beginning of the story O'Connor represents the theme of comedy by describing an annoying old southern grandmother. O’Connor also shows you the horror in the very beginning of the story by bringing the Misfit into the story, this furthermore lets foreshadowing to come in and add depth to the story. The grandmother said she would have done well to marry Mr. Teagarden because he was a gentleman and a very wealthy man. This shows she values money and material comforts over love and relationship. Than you have the Misfit who seems straightforward, with little guilt. Unlike the grandmother, who thinks she is superior to everyone else, the Misfit seriously questions the meaning of life and his role in it. Because the Misfit has questioned himself and his life so closely, he shows very high intelligence that the grandmother lacks. He is even more religious than the grandmother who prays and leans on God in the end of her life. "I was a gospel singer for a while," The Misfit said. "I been most everything. Been in the arm service both land and sea, at home and abroad, been twice married, been an undertaker, been with the railroads, plowed Mother Earth, been in a tornado, seen a man burnt alive oncet.” ( O’Connor 24) I am not sure if the grandmother god in the end or was just manipulating her way, to not die and only care for herself. "She would of been a good woman," The Misfit said, "if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life." "Some fun!" Bobby Lee said. "Shut up, Bobby Lee" The Misfit said. "It's no real pleasure in life.” ( O’Connor 28) Lastly the misfit is in a way is compared to God, he judges people on who they really are, and even though he murders them all, he is very calm and at one point even said he'd prefer not to kill anyone if he didn't have to.
