War comes with mass amounts of destruction, death, and problems. Not everyone is equipped to deal with war. Frederick is a young boy, who finds himself in a situation with no other choice but to participate in the war. In the book “All The Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr, the author uses Frederick to show, oftentimes people break due to their inability to deal with struggle.

People not involved in the war are usually more spirited, as they have not been tainted by the tragedies of war yet. Frederick is beaten up by the boys, due to being weak and having a different opinion. Which leads to Frederick, being bedridden and having severe brain damage. When Werner visits Frederick he sees “blobs of porridge cling to Fredericks Whiskers and his placemat”(Doerr192). The author’s description of Frederick is similar to a baby eating food. This shows that Frederick is no longer the curious boy he used to be and is now merely a person that cannot do day-to-day things or form many thoughts. After the war is over, Frederick continues to live in Berlin, where his mother takes care of him. Mutti tries to help Werner’s memories by doing things he likes, such as bird spotting. Mutti spots an owl and shows Frederick. “The owl hears something[:] Then it goes, and the darkness swallows it”. “Frederick keeps his gaze toward the shadows [:]his’s body become rigid and veins pop out of his neck”(Doerr 338). The bird represents Frederick’s spirit, showing that there will always be a little bit of spirit within him even if it comes in glimpses. It may seem like a hopeful or positive aspect. However, it also shows the brutal effects of war. Frederick was a young curious boy, who was interested in birds but, now reduced to a man, stuck in a chair unable to do basic things, a glimpse of his former self.
