Anthony Cappello Mrs. Lawler ELA 8 28 April 2023 Literary Analysis Theme Essay “The Outsiders” by S.E Hinton, is a story about two rival gangs of teenagers and how two poor greasers run away, sharing fights, stories, danger, and friendship along the way. The story implies that life can change at any moment, but you choose what to make of it. One example of life changing is when Darry slaps Ponyboy. The author states, “Darry wheeled around and slapped me so hard that it knocked me against the door… “Come on Johnny, we’re running away.” Johnny asked no questions. We ran for several blocks before getting tired” (Hinton, 58-59). This evidence shows that when Darry slapped Ponyboy, Ponyboy ran away, which proves the claim because when Darry slaps Ponyboy, his life is changed, so he decided to run away. …show more content…

According to the text, “Since Mom and Dad were killed in an auto-wreck, the three of us get to stay together, as long as we behave” (Hinton, 11). Another quote states, “Darry didn’t deserve to work like an old man when he was only twenty… we just didn’t have the money for him to go to college, even with the athletic scholarship. And now he didn’t have time between jobs to even think about collage” (Hinton, 24). This citation proves that when Curtis' parents died, their family’s life changed a lot because Darry had to work two jobs so he couldn’t go to college, and his brothers and him all had to behave to stay together.
