A literary device is a tool that a writer uses to better their work of literature rather than just writing in a monotoned style with no other additives in it to make it better than it was to start with. Devices used in the short story “ Roselily” by Alice Walker include stream of consciousness, prose, and and narrative. The literary device of stream of consciousness is used in the short story “ Roselily” throughout the entire work because it is told in this manner. Stream of consciousness is a form of writing in which the story is told where “ details are not presented chronologically” ( Short Stories for Students 174). Throughout the whole story it is told in the form of memories from her past and her thoughts of the future
