Assignment 1 In the excerpt, “Unteaching the Five-Paragraph Essay” by Marie Foley, it reveals how the Five-Paragraph Essay formula as an unnatural method of writing. Foley shows that this formula is used by teachers as a strategy for survival, since it would be easier to teach a class the formula of five-paragraph than to teach the students individually. Also that this formula was originally was planned to help retain the efficiency and clarity of the essay. It’s a useful step for beginning student to write and to overcome writer’s block.
The book that was read in class was ‘Runner’ by Robert Newton. It was based in the year 1919 in Richmond which is a poor suburb in Melbourne. It is about a boy named Charlie Feehan who is only fourteen years old. He lives with his Ma and little brother Jack. Charlie and his family aren’t very wealthy.

As a previous Pulitzer Prize winner, Warren knows what it takes to win this prestigious award: effective writing skills to get the message to their intended audience. Since 1918, the Pulitzer Prize for fiction has recognized excellence in American writing. When Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings won this award in 1939 for her work in The Yearling, she did a remarkable job of telling the journey of a boy and a fawn.
Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer is a nonfiction story of Chris McCandless, a young graduate who was found dead in the Alaskan wilderness in September 1992. This narrative follows young Chris McCandless to his journey from the days before he started his journey, all the way to his last journal entries. Many believe Chris was not mentally healthy and falled under the “bush-casualty” stereotype. Chris does fall under some of the categories of the bush-casualty but does not completely fall under the category. He did die from the romantic view of the wilderness but did survive a considerate amount of time in the wilderness without having any past experience.
Lucille Parkinson McCarthy, author of the article, “A Stranger in Strange Lands: A College Student Writing Across the Curriculum”, conducted an experiment that followed one student over a twenty-one month period, through three separate college classes to record his behavioral changes in response to each of the class’s differences in their writing expectations. The purpose was to provide both student and professor a better understanding of the difficulties a student faces while adjusting to the different social and academic settings of each class. McCarthy chose to enter her study without any sort of hypothesis, therefore allowing herself an opportunity to better understand how each writing assignment related to the class specifically and “what
In the short story by Sandra Cisneros, “Eleven,” the author has a negative, frustrated attitude towards being eleven. The author conveys this by using literary devices such as symbolism, and repetition. The author’s use of symbolism is demonstrated in the red sweater. To the author, the red sweater is something that she is embarrassed about since its “ugly,” “raggedy,” and “old” (25).
What does it mean to be a writer? Who or what defines a writer? Is it up to the critics, the readers, or the author’s original intentions? For Richard Wright and James Baldwin, their own authorial intentions define their work. Baldwin identified with Wright through his literature as he was growing up.
We all have our differences, from food to language to beliefs. We all have troubles accepting differences, though, even the author of this herself. Not accepting differences could be the fall of humanity. We all could go against one another, destroying ourselves in the process. If we keep discriminating each other this is a possible effect of it.
For two things that seem to have nothing in common, they have more in common than one would think. A rock song, by the name of “Born to Run” written and sung by Bruce Springsteen in 1974; and the Inaugural Speech of the 45th president of the United States, Donald Trump. Genre elements are elements that help set the scene for a plot, either a writing, or even a film. When the two writings, the inaugural speech of Donald Trump, and Springsteen’s iconic “Born to Run” were analyzed, various genre elements emerged. Genre elements analyzed included tone, pathos, language, and literary elements.
How do authors demonstrate their purpose through their writing? In three short stories different authors use literary devices to make their readers question tradition. The first story named “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson is about a tradition where a village throw stones at a person every year. Another story “The Pedestrian” by Ray Bradbury is about people being inside their homes at night watching television, except one man who will rather walk outside. Kurt Vonnegut has a story called “2BRO2B” in which he discusses how people are in favor of a perfect world.
Politics and the English Language 1) Orwell’s thesis is not directly stated but is implied in paragraph two that English is not really precise and many words are used to confuse, brain wash or have a negative view on people. He uses numerous negative connotations. He gives valid examples about how it can influence people 's thinking though it can be ended if some time is focused on improving it. 7)
Literary Analysis Suspense. It's what makes us sit on the edge of our seats at movies, or has us biting our nails as we read. It’s the backbone behind any classic horror film where the babysitter keeps getting unknown phone calls about checking the children and she asks the police to trace the call only to get a call back saying it's coming from upstairs.
Science fiction in my opinion is often used as social commentary. Social commentary is defined as a spoken or written act of rebellion toward an individual or group; commentary on social issues of society. There are plenty of hidden messages from author. Take Susanne Collins novel The Hunger Games, for example. This fascinating story could work as a center piece on table hidden messages.
“The Lottery”, by Shirley Jackson is a very suspenseful, yet very shocking short story. This story is set in a small village, on a hot summers day in June. Flowers are blooming, and the towns people are gathering for the lottery, which is a tradition the town does every year. As the reader reads the first paragraph they think this is a happy story. The title also says, “The Lottery” which is a word often used for winning something or receiving a prize.
“On the Subway,” written by Sharon Olds, is written from the perspective of what is presumed to be an upper class white woman, who finds herself on a subway with a lower class black boy. In “On the Subway”, Olds focuses on the controversial issue of racial conflict, and the theme of White v. Black. She does so by use of contrast between whites and blacks, by using harsh enjambments, powerful imagery, and by using the tone to convey the purpose. A major strategy used by Olds throughout the poem is contrast; in this case, the contrast between blacks and whites.
