Natalie Freed Mr. Nelson Honors English 3 3/3/23 Saki and “The Interlopers” The Interlopers, written by Saki, is told from an omniscient point of view telling the story of two men hunting eachother over land. Saki includes satirical elements throughout the whole story even though the tone is serious and intense. The story has many literary elements built in that make it original to Sakis style, as well as interesting. The setting, plot, characters, literary devices and theme are the main literary factors that Saki focused on when writing “The Interlopers”. The whole entire story is ironic. The first aspect of irony within the story is when the tree pins the men down. It essentially takes them to almost die to realize that their whole feud they have had thier entire lives has no real meaning. Although before they had their change of heart they both claimed that their men were going to come and take eachother down. Georg says , “When they drag me out from under these cursed branches it won't need much clumsiness on their part to roll this mass of trunk right over on the top of you” (Saki 10). This as well is ironic because after lying there in pain restless for a very ling time Ulrich says, “ I've changed my mind. If my men are the first to come you shall be the first to be helped, as though you were my guest. We have quarrelled like devils all our lives over this stupid strip of forest” (Saki 19). After this change that went though Ulrich it had impacted Georg and he said, “Ulrich von Gradwitz, I will be your friend” (Saki 21). The last ironic scene of the short story was when they see the figures in the distance ans think it is their men. They get hopeful but eventually come to realize it was wolves coming to hunt on them.
