There are often lots and lots of different ways to tell when something is being used as a symbol. Usually symbols are super easy to find and figure out. In most of the books I have to read for school the symbols are really common ones like a raven for death or a sunrise for a new start. Other popular symbols are colors. Colors like black often symbolism death.
Symbols are often characters, animals, objects, and or actions. In The Grapes of Wrath, a symbol that I first came across when reading was the turtle that was trying to continue its journey in the rough terrain. It was run over by a truck, that threw it on to the other side of the road and it still got up and continued its way. The turtle directly symbolizes the Joad’s. Like the turtle, the Joad’s are thrown off track by the harsh environment, but continue on their journey through the hardship.
Authors use symbols in literary to show you gateways into themes. Some are easily noticed but some are much more complex. In his literary work, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, Ishmael Beah uses symbols to underscore his central theme of oppression and freedom. The symbols used in this literary work to show the theme of freedom are the moon and the cassette tape Ishmael had from his childhood rap group. The beginning of the poem he his sitting and reading and out of nowhere someone knocked on his door but while he was getting up to go get it he started thinking of Lenore the love of his life (“I had sought to borrow from my books surcease of sorrow-sorrow for the lost Lenore”line 9-10). When he goes to open the door, he opened the door to darkness and thought he heard the whisper of Lenore; so he whispers back “Lenore.”

After some research on other people 's’ opinions and reading the poem multiple times I have came up with my own opinion on what the raven symbolizes. Edgar Allan Poe did a great job on making the raven quite a mysterious and interesting character which lead to lots of theories about its symbolism. The narrator and the raven have a interesting relationship that changes throughout the story. I’m going to explain their relationship on a deeper level.
