In the short story “The Use of Force”, I have selected a quote in the story that shows that the doctor is beginning to lose his temperament and patience over a little girl who will not cooperate and open her mouth for examination. The quote says “Look here, I said to the child, we’re going to at your throat. You’re old enough to understand what I’m saying. Will you open it now by yourself or shall we have to open for you”. The doctor first shows signs of agitation from the parents in the 11th paragraph after the parents say to the child “Come on, do what he tells you. She knocks off his glasses and the when the parents say “Look what you’ve done. The nice man…”, the doctor immediately says “For heaven’s saken. Don’t call me a nice man.” It then leads to the quote that I had selected for reviewing in this story. Then he started to call the mother and child names in his head “ I had already fallen in love with the savage brat, the parents were contemptible to me.” He also talks about why he almost wanted to kill the father, after he let go of the girl when she was fighting back viciously from being held down by the father. The doctor then comes really close to snapping and letting his rage take over when the child begins to fight back over having the wooden tongue depressor between her teeth. Then the child bit down on the depressor and shattered it into splinters and caused her mouth to start bleeding and her tongue was cut. The doctor then told the parents to get a smooth handled spoon to use for looking in her mouth. He then tells the readers that he was so angry that he could torn apart the child with his own fury and that it would make him feel better and that it would be a pleasure to attack the
