Every author writes novels using different techniques and those techniques are what make a novel distinct. Bram Stoker writes the novel, Dracula, using epistolary style and first point of view. These two elements not only shape the style of the novel, but also give a different shape to the novel. The use of epistolary style and first point of view keeps the classical thrill in the novel and also helps make the story more believable to the reader. The two techniques used in Dracula help the reader be informed about characters’ viewpoints and motivation, help demonstrate character traits through journal entries, and develop suspense throughout the novel.
The author’s use of epistolary style and point of view allows the reader to be informed about what each character thinks and allows the reader to know the character’s motivation. In some parts of the novel, the author switches between journal entries to effectively build suspense in the novel. Additionally, the way Stoker slowly reveals setting and characters slowly is what also effectively increases tension in the novel. Suspense is a technique used in many novels to help keep the reader’s attention and one way Stoker does that is by decreasing the times Dracula is shown or heard about. These types of events are the events that build tension not only in the plot of the novel but also in the reader’s mind. For example, in the novel, it states, “We can do nothing as yet. Wait and see”(Stoker 263). This quote shows that in the problem, there is no solution and that they are going to have to wait for furthermore plans and ideas.
