Intensity fills the room as Jonathan Harker exposes his experiences in the presence of Count Dracula within the borders of Transylvania. Harker’s fate is filled with fear and a strange sense of ecstasy began with a visit due to legal matters. Within the text gleams descriptive language, subtle symbols, and unique style, in which Bram Stoker incorporates intense emotion, adding to the excerpt of Jonathan Harker’s time in Transylvania with Count Dracula. Throughout the text Stoker brings his writing to life by having a very particular word choice. By being the intricacy of each word he develops the excerpt from the very beginning. In the very first sentence when the count is first introduced, Stoker described Count Dracula’s appearance as “his lizard fashion” (Stoker 196) which brings an initial uneasy feeling to the audience. This description also helps the audience form a perfect mental image of the Count. Not only is the Count described with such a precise nature, the castle where this fascinating tale is set is described so thoroughly, with a “great precipice” (197) and the walls being “quite impregnable” (197) provides the strength of the Count’s power throughout Transylvania. These women, peculiar in nature, spoke before him of seduction, for rather than just speaking of “kisses” (199), they are referring to how they are going to feed on the blood that flows within Harker’s veins. These women do use their beauty to arouse him so he feels as if this were natural for being a guest to the Count. However, later on it becomes clear that these women were just in his chambers to satisfy their blood lust because the Count makes his presence known after the women begin feeding and saves Harker’s life.
