The setting and the plot create intensity for the readers throughout the story. In the story three men have a job at a light house. One day rats come from a strange ship and trap the men and the island. The call for help from a passing ship and escape the rats. The setting and plot escalate the story by having the strange ship, the men being trapped, and the battle with the rats. One day while the men are in the light house they spot a ship heading towards the island. They couldn’t recognize the ship at first making is a mystery to them. When they discover that it belongs to a famous crew it started to create questions about why nobody was aborde. The crew at the lighthouse found out soon and yelled, “The rats!”(43). When they discover that viscous sea rats had boarded the ship they learned that the crew was eaten alive. This creates suspense because it give the reader a background on the rats. This then starts to peak the reader into wondering what the rats are going to do to the tree men. …show more content…
The men new they would meet their doom if they stuck arounD, “We barely had any time to jump back, close the door leading to the gallery, descend the stairs, and shut every window tightly.”(44) This shows how they knew the rats were dangerous and feared them. This create suspense because now they are trapped by the rats and could possibly get eaten. Now they have to find a way to escape from the rats. The reader wants to keep reading to figure out what the men will do to survive the
